Guardians are an enemy added in v1.8, the Bestiary Update. They appear to be mechanical in nature, being powered by a furnace in their chest. They will only begin to appear in biomes on 2 BSC and above. They can appear in a handful of areas, and can pose a significant threat to inexperienced players.

Behavior

The Guardian wields a wooden shield that absorbs one attack (regardless of damage) before shattering. Their behavior changes depending on whether or not their shield is still in tact.

With Shield

  • The shield protects the Guardian from one of the Beheaded's attacks before shattering.
    • However, the shield will not protect the Guardian from attacks to its behind, or while it's stunned, much like the player's own shield.
    • The shield will also not shatter if a Guardian's attack is parried. This to both the axe swing and shield ram.
  • Its normal attack pattern consists of charging at the player with the shield, and then swinging its axe.

Without Shield

  • It moves faster when its shield is destroyed.
  • The Guardian gains a two-swing axe combo that can change directions during the second swing.

Strategy

  • All of its combos and attacks can be rolled through or parried, just as with most enemies.
  • It is best to attack Guardians from behind due to their shield. This makes the Assassin's Dagger and Blowgun good choices for dispatching them.
    • However, this results in the Vorpan being a rather lackluster weapon against Guardians.
  • Whips will ignore the shield, dealing damage and not destroying it.

Notes

  • This enemy can change directions even when locked in place, so keep this in mind.
  • Guardians' shields will not shatter even if using a weapon that normally bypasses shields (i.e. Valmont's Whip, Electric Whip).
  • When protected by a shield, either one generated from Protectors or the elite ability, the Guardian's shield will regenerate when it is attacked. However, they will still run and attack as if they were shieldless.
